I don’t think so much about the theologie of the song, but i think of the commercial and of the fact, that you can multiply with something that is less than one.

I actually don’t mind the “shallow happy-clappy songs”. Shallow theology is IMHO more or less like BurgerKing and McDonalds. Occasionally grabbing a meal there won’t hurt you, but if our spiritual diet is centered around fast-food-make-me-feel-good-right-now-theology worship songs we might just become sluggish whilst suffering from malnutrition at the same time. I agree that traditional church hymns can just be as awfully shallow as modern worship songs . Often history has already covered them with the dust of oblivion, but occasionally one of those songs surfaces and you think… what the heck .

Anyway, I’m more wary of what I perceive as distorted or critical theology. There are many songs where I find myself thinking: Is this really how God is? Is this really what matters? … etc. Usually I give those songs the benefit of doubt. Occasionally when I believe something is more than a little off, I just can’t get over it. In this particular song it was that one line that pushed it over the edge.

I agree that this song is mostly a call to discipleship and I’m giving Andy Parks the benefit of doubt of having written this with the best intention. I just think this song makes it way to easy to confuse the mere act of following Jesus and imitating his life with salvation. Way to easy.

I share your critical stance on the stuff happy-clappies tend to sing (along to) – and for that matter, what other church-goers sing (along to), too, as the theology of some traditional hymns can be quite horrible as well (though in different respects). But I guess there is worse around than what you have quoted here. I guess one could take it simply as an adhortation to “Nachfolge”. What do you think?

Das ist kein Scherz und keine Satire, das ist der gerechte Zorn Gottes und er wird reinigen oder vernichten. Das lässt hoffen. Und bangen gleichzeitig.
